Camp NaNoWriMo 2014

For those of you that took part last year, you already know the rules. Don’t forget to pop over to the website and fill in your details for this year’s novel.

For those that didn’t, Camp NaNoWriMo is a lot like regular NaNoWriMo.

For those of you that haven’t heard about NaNoWriMo…where have you been?!

Go on – go check it out. I’ll wait.

All back?

For those that can’t be arsed clicking the link NaNoWriMo involves writing 50,000 words in 30 days – focusing on getting through a fair chunk of Draft Zero without worrying about listening to your inner editor. If you don’t like the thought of silencing those voices then turn around now – this challenge is not for you.

A lot of people find this challenge both fun and useful. It’s a matter of splurging for a whole month and crafting enough words to play with after you’ve finished. You won’t have a finished or polished novel but you will have a massive pile of wordy words that will have filled a void in your writery world. Forcing yourself, and your characters, into action will encourage you to get that story finished. You can spend the rest of the year (or your life) finishing the other half and editing.

Hell, you can edit as you go along! There are no rules.

50,000 words in April means you’ll have to write around 1667 a day to stay on target. Easy enough to write and edit in a day. And if you’re struggling then just focus on getting the words down and making them better once the challenge is finished. Try not to agonise over every little detail – having forty-two perfectly crafted words after 30 days is all well and good but a finished novel it does not make.

Unlike regular NaNo, Camp NaNo allows you to change the word count to reflect a goal that suits you and your writing. Anything from 10,000 to 999,999…you know, if you’re feeling a little crazy.

Camp is also run twice a year, so you’ll have another shot at the challenge in a couple of months. You can either choose which month suits you best or go all out and try both!

Head on over to the Camp NaNoWriMo website, join a cabin (tiny chat rooms for encouraging your fellow writers), buy some merchandise or donate some cash, and sign up for the challenge today!

Good luck if you decide to take part!
