Back to reality

So, the April A-Z blogging challenge is over, my house is finally on the market and the bank holidays are already a distant memory…back to reality then!
Screw you real life!
I’m going to get back to work on my current novel and try to stick to a writing schedule that means I add something to it every day. I’ve worked the plot to death and have enough notes lying around for four novels! So it’s just a matter of getting my bum in a seat and forcing myself to type, type, type!
I’m currently at 77,004 words and have been for a long time now. So many events collided at once that the novel just disappeared from my radar. Hopefully once I’ve had a few hours sat down with it I’ll get back into the swing of the story. I left halfway through a pretty tense scene so it should be a little easier to pick up the loose threads and continue the scene.
I seem to remember having a bit of a problem with the direction the scene was taking so fingers crossed the break I’ve had will offer me a fresh perspective.
I’m also working on a short story which I’m struggling to categorise. It’s definitely horror, but its a little bit bleargh so I’m not sure if normal horror publications will take it. I’m still editing it so there’s no rush to find it a home but I might be asking for your help when the time comes to release it into the big bad world.
A recent invitation to write something for an ezine also has me struggling to pluck some decent horror out of my brain and smear it on the blank pages in front of me. Unfortunately the completed short story above was written for this invitation but ended up far too long – and it’s already been cut to death!
I’m working on a couple of other ideas and the piece has a limit of 2,000 words, so it shouldn’t take up too much time…famous last words!
How’s everyone else doing with their writing?

  1. I plan to get back to something that I started a while back – will need some reviewing to get me back in the zone, but it's been on 'hold' long enough. That said, I have a ff challenge piece (max 1k ) which occupied me through the wee small hours of insomnia this morning, so I'll be onto that first.
Good luck with your current WIP, anyway!

  2. Have you tried placing the story with 'Bleargh Monthly'?

I know what you mean sometimes we write a piece and wonder where the hell it will fit. Still at a least it proves you can write in different styles and sub-genres I suppose.

  3. Good luck with the tricky scene. I hate it when I get those.

I actually am not writing. Just finished the writing phase of my WiP and need to do something else for a while. But do you think I can change my focus to something else? Not as easily as I'd hoped.

  4. I bet I've been paused in my novel-writing for a longer than you have, and not just because of other edits. I've had long bouts of laziness and procrastination, too. I'm hoping my near-daily writing from the A to Z will carry over and get me back into it this month, and I wish you the best with your return as well.

Or, maybe I'll mess around in Photoshop instead…

  5. I'm hoping that the A-Z Blogging Challenge has started a habit I will be able to keep up. Have a couple of short stories that I am working on, together with an entry for this months txtlit comp. Then I might get back to the novel that has been swimming around my head for about 7 years! Think its probably time to finally get it all on paper!

  6. I have that Peanuts book!

Well the good news is you have 77,000 words, you did the sensible thing by finishing have way through a scene, and you have a detailed plot. So, it should just be a case of keeping to a daily word count. You can do it!

p.s. good luck with your house sale.

  7. You need to get back on the (headless) horse. I'm very much looking forward to the short story if you care to send it my way?? Hmmmmm
