Nano: Day 2 – Go, go, Gadget Nano

For those of you that haven’t seen this yet, take a look at the ‘NaNo stats’ tab on your profile page.
This is a really handy tool for keeping track of your progress.
It shows you how many words you have written and how many you need to write to reach each day’s word count. It shows your overall progress in raw data and graphical format. But best of all it forces you to acknowledge failure! If you start to fall behind it’s going to let you know. Your ‘unsuccessful days’ will grow, your ‘days behind schedule’ will multiply and your ‘words per day to finish on time’ will make you cry.

How great is that! It’s certainly a step up from the old stats page.

More gadgets await you in the ‘fun stuff’ page of the nano site. Make sure you yoink a web badge for your blog or web page to help inspire you and others to keep up the word count.

Also, grab a ‘word count widget’ for your site. These are very handy. This widget is basically a dynamic image, which means it’s an image that updates itself. Pick a widget you like the look of and copy the simple line of code onto your site and it will show your overall progress to the whole world! (That’s if the whole world visits your blog…).

The image will update to show your current word count. Inspire other people to take part or just piss them off with your amazing word count. Either way it gets people writing, so it can’t be bad.
But…whichever gadget you grab, don’t forget it’s still about the writing! Not the fancy widgets and thingamabobs. The gadgets are supposed to be tools that help you complete the challenge, if you just use them as gizmos to show off with but don’t keep up with your word count? Then you’re just one of those loser types that adds random strangers to Facebook just to prove how many ‘friends’ you have!
1,667…1,667…1,667! Get that number firmly lodged in your head! And your novel!

Tyyyyypppppppppeee….

  1. I only saw the new stats page when I failed miserably to reach the total last night. It's certainly an improvement like you said. More interactivity, more of an incentive to get a move on!

  2. I looked at my stats first thing this morning and sighed – not good. So I endeavoured to improve them dramatically today and seemed to have won (er. . .temporiarly). LOL.

    Onward!

  3. But gadgets are a great distraction Baggy! Just what I need when I have deadlines to meet 😀

Yep, the stats page is great Charmed. Much more incentive to get smaller steps complete. Nice to be able to see my 'words per day to finish on time' dropping as well. Now I don't have to do 1,667 a day to finish on time…it's only 1,655 😀

Ellie, I was about to give up for the night on 3,686 but seeing your word count over 4k has inspired me to keep going 😀 Just to kick your butt of course

….now on 4,099! Boo yah! Unless of course you've updated your word count since I last checked 😛
