Nano: Day 7 – Slowly, slowly catchy monkey (Part 1)

After yesterdays attempt at catching up to the 10k mark I felt a bit dejected. I knew I had today to try again, but as soon as midnight hit last night catching up would be 1,667 words more difficult.

I’m trying to write in 500ish word bursts. Not allowing myself to stop or take a break until I can update my word count in 500ish increments. I’m finding watching my word count jump up in this fashion quite helpful. It’s nice to be able to sit there and think “only two more bursts until I get another 1k under my belt!”

These bursts are taking from anywhere around 10mins to about 30mins. I know this makes it sound like I should be able to do a whole lot more, especially when I’m not doing much else today, but my muse seems to be playing games with me today. Only allowing me to write in furious short-lived bursts of inspiration.

I’m not complaining, it’s working.

And with another five hours (ish) to go, I’m sure I’ll hit at least 10k. That means I’ll only be one day behind!

Hopefully there will be a Part 2 to this post sometime before midnight celebrating the fact I passed the 10k mark.

  1. I do short bursts like that too, Steven. Sometimes I get on a roll and end up writing 800/900 without realising which is really great.

  2. It's a good way to zoom ahead in word count isn't it 🙂 I keep forcing myself to get to round figures that way when I go over by four or five words I have to get to the next bigger rounder figure 😀

  3. At first I was working to the word count, but as like you, I have fallen behind, I too have tried working in bursts. Today, the goal was to reach the 10k mark. Which I achieved. Tomorrow, not much writing will be done my end.

    Good luck on your journey!

  4. Nice work on reaching the 10k mark Ingrid!

I've stalled at that point because I've been busy with work work and editing a short story before the deadline this week.

Keep up the good work! Whatever totals we get by the end of the month it will probably be much more than an average month of writing! 🙂
