The beginning of the end

That’s more like it! Somewhere around 4,000 words written tonight…woo!

I’m starting to build up to the climax of my novel now and the action is beginning to hot up. I’ve just set my main characters on their path to the final conflict and it’s looking pretty tense, and bloody, already. I think I have a decent enough rough (very rough!) plan of what’s going to happen in this end section…well some of it…sort of.

I might not make my total word count by the time this one has reached a natural conclusion, but I do still need to go back and fill in all the sections that say ‘make this more tense’ and ‘add explodey bits here’, you know – the normal stuff.

The only problem with going back and filling in some of the details I brushed over in the excitement to get the damn thing written is that I may be tempted to start polishing the novel as I go…

(Inside Editor: Bingo! My time has come and I’m going t….)

NO! Back in my head you go Inside Editor. Your time will come but not for a little while yet, and stop saying words like bingo…it’s weird.

I want to get a complete first draft done before I start to edit in any form, so I’ll have to force myself to fly through the sections of ‘add this’ and just crack on with filling in the missing information.

I’ll no doubt pick up some problems on the way, things I’ve missed or details that change from page to page, but that’s what notepads are for. I’ll just have to keep one at hand and make notes about anything that needs consideration while I’m editing…

(Inside Editor: That’s my job that is!)

Yes, well done IE, that is your job…but not yet.

  1. Sounds exciting and I envy where you're at. This is where the hard work starts I guess but all the fun begins.

Good luck with reaching The End and writing all those explodey bits.

  2. Well done – the end is in sight. I find my writing improves as I get near the end of something and there's less work for the inner editor to do. No idea why.
(But I'm back at chapter 7 of my Nano novel and finding it hard work. My editor appears to be on strike – why couldn't it have done that when I was first writing?)
Keep plugging – you'll get there.

  3. B.I.N.G.O and bingo was his naaaaaaaaaaaaame!!

Yeah, I'm guilty of letting my inner editor out way too early, which is why so parts of my novel vary from polished to needing a complete re-write.

I think I need more explodey bits.

Good work on ooomphing your word count though. No go and write some more, you go write the shit out of that novel.

  4. Thanks for comments guys, I'm still working on it and yep, you're right this is where the hard work kicks in! Coming up with a decent, yet logical, ending is bloody hard work, and where a lot of books I read usually let me down.

Fingers crossed I don’t make the same mistakes.
